As a global institution with over 3,000 staff working across the world, at LSHTM we are proud to be members of diverse community in the world. LSHTM is committed to providing an inclusive education, research and working environment free from bullying and harassment, ensuring all staff and students are treated and treat others with respect, consideration, courtesy and dignity.
We are committed to examining and advancing race equality and equity at LSHTM. A detailed action plan to deliver the recommendations of the Independent Review to address discrimination and advance anti-racism and equality at LSHTM was agreed and incorporated into the School’s broader EDI action plan in 2022. Progress on this work continues in our EDI strategy.
Since June 2020, LSHTM has committed to the principles of Advance HE's Race Equality Charter (REC). We currently hold an institutional Race Equality Charter Bronze award, valid until 2030.
Public document
LSHTM's Bronze Institutional REC submission and action plan is available online. The submission and action plan have been endorsed by LSHTM's Director and senior leadership team. The action plan sets out our key priority areas for progressing race equity: recruitment, progression and retention, leadership and accountability, culture and community and student experience.
Our current award was conferred following an award conditions response, outlining how we will ensure we meet all award criteria throughout the award period.
Dedicated resource
Dedicated resource and expertise to promote race equality is embedded across LSHTM.
The Race Equity Taskforce plays a key role in promoting race equality at LSHTM and currently forms the School's REC self-assessment team. Dedicated financial resource within the EDI budget is allocated to support this work, including ensuring co-chairs' contributions are recognised.
- Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Team – this team oversees and implements race equality related work.
- Race Equity Taskforce – consists of race equality specialists and colleagues with an interest in this work from across LSHTM, responsible for overseeing the development of the Institutional REC submission and action plan. Race Equity Taskforce members act as representatives of the group on various working groups and committees across the School, including the central EDI Committee.
- Central Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee – is a committee of Senate and has oversight of LSHTM’s strategic planning and implementation on all matters relating to equality, diversity and inclusion including race equality.
- Faculty Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committees – are comprised of staff (academic and professional services) and research degree students from across each faculty’s departments. The Committees support and advise upon policies and practices promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion within their respective faculties.
Data collection and monitoring
Race and ethnicity data is collected for both staff and students as part of various processes, including recruitment, promotion, admissions and awards. This data is also collected as part of annual staff and student engagement surveys. The data is reviewed as part of our annual EDI reporting, meeting our statutory duties. Insights from the data informs the work of our central EDI team and Race Equity Taskforce, including the development of evidence-based REC action plan, as well as broader EDI related initiatives across LSHTM. Key metrics are reviewed annually to support our ongoing efforts to progress race equity.
