From co-developing bespoke training to support drug trials or health financing, to building global health leadership and creating new learning opportunities, these stories highlight what we achieve together.

Developing specialist training in real-world evidence for oncology
Students in study space

LSHTM worked with subject matter experts to develop a focused programme for cancer professionals needing expertise in evidence from real-world data

As healthcare systems, regulators and the pharmaceutical industry increasingly look beyond clinical trials to understand how treatments perform in real-world settings, the demand for expertise in real-world evidence (RWE) continues to grow.

LSHTM developed the Real World Evidence in Oncology short course to support professionals working across oncology, research, healthcare decision-making and evidence generation.

Drawing on LSHTM's world-leading expertise in epidemiology, statistics, pharmacoepidemiology and public health, the specialist programme was carefully designed to help participants critically assess, generate and apply real-world evidence in practice.

The course combines academic rigour with practical case studies and applied learning. With direct relevance to workplace challenges, it strengthens participants’ understanding of observational research, evidence interpretation and the opportunities and limitations of real-world data within oncology.

This LSHTM course has been funded by an educational grant from Pfizer Ltd. LSHTM has retained full editorial control.

Beyond oncology

This programme demonstrates LSHTM's wider capability to design and deliver tailored training solutions for organisations across the health ecosystem.

Whether the requirement relates to oncology, epidemiology, health security, implementation science, AI in healthcare, climate and health or another specialist area, LSHTM can work with partners to develop learning solutions that align with organisational priorities, workforce needs and strategic objectives.

Our starting point is always the challenge that needs to be solved. From there, we bring together the right expertise to create education and training that delivers practical impact.

Bringing academic expertise to business for drug trial development
Graphic with words: "Where knowledge creates impact"

LSHTM established a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with pharmaceutical company GSK to advance its target trial emulation capabilities

The project will demonstrate how target trial emulation (TTE), an approach that uses real-world data such as disease registries or patients’ electronic health records to investigate the safety and effectiveness of treatments, can be leveraged within GSK. KTP Associate and statistician Dr Matthew Smith will integrate TTE methods across multiple therapeutic areas at GSK. The partnership with GSK’s Quantitative Sciences Innovation group sees Dr Smith based at GSK day-to-day with Dr Aris Perperoglou and Dr Adrian Mander, with LSHTM academic supervision provided by Professors Ruth Keogh and Jonathan Bartlett.

Developing globally minded doctors through intercalated study

LSHTM and HKU Medicine are supporting medical students to broaden their clinical education through intercalated master’s study

Modern doctors need more than clinical knowledge. They need to understand the wider systems, societies and environments that shape health.

Through its enrichment year, HKU Medicine in Hong Kong gives students space within the medical degree for wider academic, professional and personal development. This includes HKU medical students spending a year in London for intercalated MSc study at LSHTM,  exploring public and global health in an international postgraduate environment.

At LSHTM, students study alongside clinicians, researchers, policymakers and public health professionals from around the world. They develop skills in interpreting evidence, epidemiology, research and critical analysis, while gaining a broader understanding of health beyond the hospital.

For students, intercalated study can deepen specialist interests, strengthen research skills and shape future clinical, academic or policy careers.

For medical schools, it is also a strategic investment. It shows a commitment to developing doctors who are clinically capable, intellectually curious, socially aware and globally minded - graduates who can understand health systems, work across cultures and respond to complex health challenges.

The LSHTM–HKU Medicine example demonstrates how intercalated study can enrich the medical curriculum, strengthen student experience and support the development of more rounded future doctors.

LSHTM welcomes interest from medical schools looking to create similar opportunities for their students.

LSHTM partnership with university in Thailand to create a joint Master’s in Planetary and Sustainable Health

Chiang Mai University (CMU) and LSHTM are working together to develop a new MSc in Planetary and Sustainable Health, which CMU plans to launch in 2027. The collaboration brings together expertise from both institutions to help design a programme that addresses some of the most pressing global health and environmental challenges. CMU commissioned LSHTM to develop an outline programme specification and producing a recommendations report drawing on our expertise in planetary health to support the Thai university’s planning. Discussions are continuing to explore further opportunities for collaboration in future phases of the project.
