The School was founded in 1899 and incorporated by a Royal Charter on 1 April 1924. The current supplemental version of the Royal Charter, came into effect in March 2009. Amendments to the Charter were approved by Privy Council in July 2014.
Under the terms of the Charter, the Council is the School’s governing body and has sole management control and supervision of the School. Council, which meets four times a year, delegates some of its functions to its committees and some operational powers to the Director of the School.
The School is a charitable institution and an “exempt charity” as defined by Schedule 3 of the Charities Act 2011. This means that it is not required to be registered with the Charity Commissioners for England and Wales, but is instead regulated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, which is responsible for ensuring that the School fulfils its charity law obligations.
