LGBTQ+ equality

LGBTQ+ Network

The LGBTQ+ Network at LSHTM is open to all LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning and other sexual orientations) staff, students and allies. The network holds a hybrid meeting on the first Wednesday of each month, with further details available on the network’s intranet page or Teams site. If you would like to know more or are interested in joining, please visit the LGBTQ+ Network intranet page (intranet).

Equity Diversity and Inclusion within LSHTM

LSHTM follows several guiding principles in relation to EDI, with one principle being specific to LGBTQ+: Being proactive in championing LGBTQ+ equality worldwide.

LGBTQ+ inclusion, from a governance perspective, is demonstrated though the School’s EDI strategy, action plan and its policies and procedures, such as the gender reassignment and trans equality policy. You can find more information, including the full documents on our EDI strategy and reports page.

LGBTQ+ travel guidance

LGBTQ+ travel guidance has been developed as a resource for members of LSHTM are travelling abroad or who are providing line management or academic supervision to LGBTQ+ individuals who travel abroad.

LGBTQ+ parents and carers

LSHTM is a member of the charity Working Families, the UK’s work-life balance charity, who help working parents and carers - and their employers - find a better balance between responsibilities at home and in the workplace. They provide free legal advice to parents and carers on their rights at work as well as giving employers the tools they need to support their employees while creating a flexible, high-performing workforce.

Additionally, we have a Parents and Carer’s Network (intranet) with a dedicated Teams site.

All our family friendly policies are inclusive of LGBTQ+ staff, such as our shared parental leave policy and procedure. A list of policies is available on our regulatory documents page.

Stonewall Diversity Champion

We are a Stonewall Diversity Champion which celebrates the fact we are committed to working to support staff who are LGBTQ+. Partnering with Stonewall allows us to access external expertise; ensuring policies, procedures and general practice are in line with the most equitable approaches for the LSHTM community. This is particularly crucial within the global environment LSHTM operates in, which has varying levels of tolerance for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Employee Assistance Programme

LSHTM has partnered with Health Assured EAP to provide staff access to an independent and confidential support and services network. There are a number of LGBTQ+ resources available, amongst the general offering. Existing LSHTM staff can find out more about the Employee Assistance Programme (intranet).
