The Global Financing Facility for Women and Children’s Health – A New Way of Financing for Development

Mariam Claeson, Director of The Global Financing Facility (GFF) for Every Woman Every Child will present the who, what, where and how of the GFF. The GFF was launched in 2015 as the new approach to smart, scaled and sustained financing across reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health. She will share lessons learned to date from front-runner countries and discuss the challenges and opportunities for closing the financing gap as we make progress on the SDGs.

Speaker Bio:

Mariam Claeson, M.D., M.P.H. is the Director of the Global Financing Facility for Every Women Every Child. She previously served as the Director for Maternal Newborn and Child Health at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which she joined in July 2012. Prior to that, she was the Regional Program Coordinator for AIDS in the South Asia Region of the World Bank (2005-2012) and the Lead Public Health Specialist in the Health, Nutrition and Population, Human Development Network of the World Bank (1996-2004). Before joining the World Bank, Dr Claeson was responsible for country implementation at the Global Program for the Control of Diarrheal Diseases, World Health Organization (1987-1995). She has worked in clinical practice at the rural district level (Tanzania, Bangladesh and Bhutan); in national immunization and diarrheal disease control (Ethiopia, 1984-1986); and, for the World Bank in health sector development programs in middle- and low-income countries, including in Egypt, Jordan, Uzbekistan, China and the Philippines and in national HIV/AIDS programs, including in Afghanistan and India.

This event is being hosted by the MARCH Centre and IDEAS at LSHTM.

The Centre for Maternal, Adolescent and Reproductive Child Health (MARCH) is the central hub for women’s and children’s health within the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. MARCH Centre strengthens and promotes innovation, evaluation and evidence-based policy making by fostering communication and collaboration inside and outside the School and between researchers and policy makers, across a range of settings in over 100 countries and multiple disciplines.

Informed Decisions for Actions in Maternal and Newborn Health (IDEAS). IDEAS aims to improve the health and survival of mothers and babies through generating evidence to inform policy and practice. IDEAS use measurement and evaluation to understand which health innovations and programmes deliver the greatest impact on maternal and newborn survival at scale, as well as how and why they work, in Ethiopia, North-Eastern Nigeria and the state of Uttar Pradesh in India.
