Embedding midwives in pre-hospital and interfacility emergency care systems

Sharing strategies to address challenges in prehospital maternity emergencies across low-, middle- and high-income countries

MARCH event card

This webinar is hosted by the Transport and Referral Community of Practice.

Timely, safe management of obstetric emergencies saves lives, yet preventable deaths from postpartum haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, and inequities in urgent maternity care persist globally. While facility-based improvements remain essential, emerging evidence highlights the critical role of getting women and newborns to and between appropriate facilities.

The revised Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) Framework renews attention on prehospital and referral systems in low- and middle- income countries and seeks to bridge learning between Emergency Care and Maternal–Newborn Health communities.

In the UK, prehospital and interfacility maternity transport is comparatively more developed, with midwives not leaving wards to travel in ambulances but are embedded within ambulance services - planning how they run, training staff, and improving quality. However, this part of the care pathway of women and newborns still receives limited focus and faces ongoing challenges.

In this webinar, midwives working within emergency care will discuss:

  • The role of midwives and maternity specialist paramedics in urgent and emergency care
  • Lessons for countries designing or strengthening their own systems
  • How the EmONC Framework can help integrate and address shared challenges across settings
