EmONC revisioned - Prioritising emergency referral

An overview of the revised Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) framework and new signal function and suggested referral readiness indicators related to emergency referral of women and newborns.

Event card for MARCH

Emergency referral was implicitly acknowledged in the previous EmONC framework but not represented through signal functions or indicators. To reduce preventable deaths, EmONC facilities must be able to arrange rapid referral in an equipped ambulance with a skilled provider for women and newborns requiring higher level care. The revised Framework now prioritises interfacility referral as a core facility function, with a new signal function and referral readiness indicator.

This webinar, hosted by the Transport and Referral Community of Practice, outlines the evidence for this shift, and its alignment with growing global focus on strengthening emergency care systems.

Professor Lynn Freeman

Professor Lynn Freeman directs the Averting Maternal Death and Disability Programme at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, as well as a maternal and newborn health and emergency care expert who were involved in developing the signal function and referral readiness indicators.
