Invitations & Registration

When will I receive an invitation to the ceremony?

Invitations will be emailed to face-to-face MSc and doctoral students in November 2019. Distance learning students will be notified in mid December 2019 if they are eligible to attend.

Doctoral students must submit hard-bound copies of their thesis by 10 January 2020, 17:00 to be eligible to attend the ceremony. Invitations will be emailed as soon as possible after submission.

If you are a face-to-face student, make sure to let Student Records know if your contact details have changed, including your personal email address, as you may not receive your invitation otherwise. Distance learning students should ensure they contact UoL via the Student Portal to update contact details before December 2019.

Any student that believes they are eligible to attend the ceremony but who have not received their invitation by mid December 2019 should contact graduation@lshtm.ac.uk with the following details: full name, student number, course, and current email address.

Am I eligible to attend the ceremony?

If you find that you have not successfully passed this year you will not be eligible to attend the ceremony. Those re-sitting will be eligible to attend once they have passed, or may defer their attendance to a future year subject to successfully completing your programme.

As a distance learning student, I have been invited to attend the University of London (UoL) Graduation ceremony as well.  Which ceremony should I attend?

You are very welcome to attend both the LSHTM and UoL ceremonies.  You will receive the invitation to the UoL ceremony directly from them.

The LSHTM ceremony will be held at Friends House on 20 February 2020 and the UoL ceremony will be held at the Barbican Centre on 3 March 2020.

How do I register my attendance?

You must register in advance if you wish to attend. Please confirm your attendance by completing the online registration form. This link will be emailed to you with your invitation in November 2019 for face-to-face students and in mid December for distance learning students.  The deadline for registration is 12 January, 23:59.

 

How do I know which ceremony to book for?

Your allocated ceremony timeslot is dependent on your programme and is confirmed in your invitation.   We have one morning and one afternoon ceremony.  We are unable to change which ceremony you attend.

How much are the tickets?

Students can attend free of charge.  Guest tickets are priced at £20 per ticket.

I have received my certificate before the Graduation ceremony. Can I still attend the ceremony?

Depending on your programme you may receive your certificate in advance of the Graduation ceremony date. You are still very welcome to attend the ceremony and celebrate with family and friends. 

I am unable to attend. How do I receive my certificate?

Your certificate will be posted to the address we have on your file.

 Guests

How do I book tickets for my guests?

If additional tickets are available, we will announce via email after 14 January 2020.  These tickets will be available on a first come first serve basis.

The ceremonies last up to two hours and are not suitable for very young children. Babies and children aged two years and under are permitted to sit on an adults’ lap, however this is not recommended. Children aged over two years will require a seat, and this will need to be covered within your ticket allocation.

A crèche facility, for children between the ages of 8 months and up to 10 years old, will be available free of charge for the duration of the ceremony.  You must register your interest for this service when you register your attendance with spaces available on a first come, first served basis.

The crèche will be at the ceremony venue, Friends House.  The opening times for the morning ceremony will be 9:00 - 12:45 and for the afternoon ceremony 13:30 - 16:45.  Children will need to be collected before returning to Keppel Street for the reception.

Visas

How do I request a visa support letter to come to London for the ceremony?

Once invitations have been issued in November 2019 and you have registered to attend, face-to face students requiring visa support letters for themselves or their guests should contact: studentrecords@lshtm.ac.uk and attach a copy of their passport photo page and full names of those who require a visa.

Gowns

Do I need to hire a gown?

You are not obliged to wear a gown. Approximately 75% of attendees usually choose to wear a gown. You are also invited to wear national dress.

How do I hire a gown?

You can hire a gown from the Ede & Ravenscroft website.  The deadline for ordering a gown is 13 February 2020, 17:00.

How much do gowns cost to hire?

Pre-order prices for gowns are:

Masters: £51

Doctoral: £58

There will be a limited number of gowns, available on a first come, first served basis, to book on the day.  However there will be a small increase in the prices from the above.

What should I wear on the day? 

Gowns are designed to be worn with shirts, therefore for comfort and practicality, it is recommended that you wear a button-through jacket or shirt which will enable you to attach the academic hood to your clothing without pins.  If you choose to wear clothing other than a shirt or blouse we would recommend that you bring some safety pins with you so that your hood will remain secure.

Photography & video

Will professional photographs be taken at the ceremony?

Tempest Photography will provide photographic services on the day.  This will include an opportunity to have photos with your guests. There will be photography studios set up both at Friends House and Keppel Street.

Should I book my photography session prior to attending the ceremony?

No advance booking is required. You will be able to book a slot on the day. 

What is the deadline for ordering photographs?

No advance booking is required. You will be able to order your photos on the day. 

Will the ceremony be live-streamed or recorded?

Yes. The ceremony will be recorded and available to watch live online. The livestreaming link will be made available closer to the time of the event. This feed will also be available for download after the ceremony.

The ceremony

Where will the ceremony take place?

The ceremony will take place at Friends House, 173-177 Euston Rd, London NW1 2BJ.  All attendees are invited to a celebration at LSHTM, Keppel Street, London, WC1E 7HT, following their ceremony. 

What time should I arrive for the ceremony?

Please allow 90 minutes to register, collect your gowns and have photographs taken.  Everyone must be in their seats no later than 15 minutes before the start of the ceremony.

Am I able to sit with my friends during the ceremony?

You will be pre-allocated a seat and student names will be announced according to the seating plan. It is therefore important that you sit in the seat specifically allocated to you.

How long will the ceremony last?

The ceremony will last approximately two hours.

Will there be a reception after the ceremony?

All attendees are invited to a celebration at LSHTM, Keppel Street, London, WC1E 7HT, following their ceremony.  Drinks and nibbles will be served for two hours. 

Graduation brochure

Will my name appear in the graduation brochure?

Yes. All those eligible to graduate will have their name in the brochure, irrespective of whether you choose to attend the ceremony.

Will I receive a copy of the graduation brochure?

Those attending the ceremony will receive a copy of the brochure on the day. 

If I don’t attend the ceremony, can I get a copy of the graduation brochure?

Unfortunately we are unable to post brochures after the ceremony.  We can send you an electronic copy of the brochure on request after the ceremony, please email graduation@lshtm.ac.uk.

Certificates

I have received my certificate before the Graduation Ceremony. Can I still attend the ceremony?

Merchandise

Will LSHTM merchandise be available on the day?

Yes. There will be a selection of LSHTM merchandise available at the Keppel Street building during the receptions. 

How can I order LSHTM merchandise?

LSHTM merchandise can be ordered at any time from our online shop.  There will be a selection of stock available at the Keppel Street building on the day of the ceremonies during the receptions.

Will LSHTM pay for my travel expenses?

No. Travel and accommodation costs must be met by attendees.
