2024-25 NIHR Pre-Doctoral Fellowships

The Medical Statistics Department at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is keen to identify promising candidates for NIHR Pre-Doctoral Fellowships.

Fellowships provide funding for up to two years’ training in health research, including salary and tuition fees. The first year is spent undertaking an MSc in Medical Statistics or Health Data Science, and the second year working on a research project employed as a member of staff in the Department.  Fellows will receive mentoring and support throughout the Fellowship from members of our Department, to enable them to develop their statistical and research skills.

Supervisor(s) work with applicants to help develop an NIHR Fellowship application; funding is subject to the project being selected by NIHR. We offer exciting projects supervised by world-leading experts in statistical methodology. Some of the areas in which projects could be undertaken include:

  • Alternative clinical trial designs
  • Causal inference
  • Bayesian analysis, genetic epidemiology, “omics” data
  • Analysis of survival data
  • Application and development of methodology for analysing electronic health records and other big data resources
  • Missing data

More information about the scheme can be found on the NIHR website

Eligibility for funding

To be eligible, candidates must:

  1. Be eligible for full-time employment in the UK
  2. Have completed, or be about to complete, an undergraduate degree in mathematics, statistics or closely related subject, with an achieved or expected grade of 2:1 or above

Applications received after the closing date will not be considered.

The Fellowship is highly competitive. Applicants for whom an appropriate supervisor can be identified will be contacted for interview, and if successful, will be expected to work with the Supervisor to develop the Fellowship proposal. The Fellowship application must be submitted to NIHR by 14 March 2024.
