"You exemplify the significant role that the Unit plays in building capacity across Africa, and I am happy that you will continue working with MRCG. Once again, congratulations!" Professor Umberto D’Alessandro said MRCG Unit Director.
Professor Togun brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this prestigious role. He completed his medical training in Nigeria before joining the MRCG. Initially a Research Clinician in the HIV research programme, he later worked with the TB Case Contact Cohort. He completed a clinical PhD training fellowship at the Unit, supervised by Professor Beate Kampmann, and went on to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship in Global Health at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
"I am truly honoured and delighted to reach this milestone in my career, and I am deeply grateful to my family, mentors, supervisors, colleagues, and the dedicated study teams who have contributed so much to my growth," said Professor Togun.
A leader in his field, Professor Togun focuses on improving the diagnosis and management of TB and post-TB disability, particularly in children and adolescents in TB-endemic countries. His research integrates epidemiological, laboratory, and qualitative methods to address the continuum of care for children with TB from prevention and diagnosis to the evaluation of post-TB lung disease.
“MRCG provided an invaluable foundation for my research training and career development. I hope my experience serves as an inspiration to junior researchers at the Unit and across Africa to fully utilize the exceptional opportunities it offers, including mentorship,” he remarked.
Professor Togun looks forward to continuing his work on TB and post-TB lung disease and strengthening the collaborative partnerships between LSHTM and institutions across West and Sub-Saharan Africa.
