Tobacco control policies and changes in adult mortality patterns in Brazil
Smoking-related mortality and changes in adult life expectancy in Brazil amid major tobacco control policies in recent decades
Over recent decades, Brazil has experienced profound changes in its mortality patterns, characterized by a sharp decline in infectious diseases, population ageing, and the growing prominence of non-communicable diseases. Within this context, the National Tobacco Control Program has introduced comprehensive prevention and regulatory measures since the 1980s substantially reducing smoking prevalence and positioning the country as a global leader in tobacco control. In this seminar, Dr Júlia Almeida Calazans examines recent mortality trends in Brazil, with a particular focus on the contribution of smoking-related mortality to changes in adult life expectancy.
Externals who wish to attend in person should report to the LSHTM reception in Keppel street at 12:30.
