Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to impose a substantial global health burden, with incidence rising in many regions. This presentation synthesizes the latest global evidence on interventions that have demonstrated impact across prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and critically reviews strategies that have failed to deliver sustained or scalable results. It concludes by outlining priority actions, innovations, and research gaps required to accelerate progress towards ending the STI epidemic worldwide.

Dr Remco Peters
Dr Remco Peters is a Medical Officer in the Department of Global HIV, TB, Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) at the World Health Organization. In this role, he contributes to global control of STIs, with a particular focus on advancing evidence-based STI prevention, diagnosis and treatment through innovation, the development of guidelines and policies, and support for programme implementation. Prior to joining WHO in 2024, Dr Peters worked as an HIV/STI clinician, epidemiologist and academic researcher, leading multiple donor-funded public health and clinical research programmes in South Africa and across the African region.
