Understanding the costs and benefits of the HPV vaccination in South Africa

Cost-effectiveness of HPV vaccination and the development of an economic model for an intervention in South Africa.

Graphic with text - LSHTM Event

In this talk, I will discuss my research on the cost-effectiveness of HPV vaccination and the development of the economic model for this intervention. This work provided one of the tools that assisted the National Department of Health and Treasury in understanding the costs and benefits of the HPV vaccination in South Africa. It also indicated the vaccine price at which it would become cost-effective to introduce the vaccine - useful information which can assist the government in negotiating a reduced vaccine price. My subsequent research on the cost of scaling up the integrated cervical cancer prevention programme that includes the HPV vaccine (at different price levels) informed the decision makers of the budget impact and affordability of this intervention.

Edina Sinanovic is a Professor of Health Economics at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where she serves as the Head of the Health Economics Division and Director of the Health Economics Unit in the School of Public Health. Over the last 28 years, her research had focused primarily on economic evaluation of alternative diagnostic and treatment healthcare interventions, especially in relation to TB and STIs, and economic considerations in vaccination, with an emphasis on the economic modelling of new vaccines. In the last five years, her research interest has expanded to estimating the budget impact of scaling up health care interventions that are cost-effective, have a potential to improve health, access to care and quality of life.
