In this seminar we showcase the work of three projects in the Sexual Health Improvement Programme
The Sexual Health Improvement Programme (SHIP) brings together clinicians, commissioners, public health professionals, members of the public and researchers to support the development of evidence-based services that will improve people’s sexual health in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, and beyond.

- Dr Catherine Dodds: HIV and Hepatitis Awareness for Tattoo and Piercing Artists
- Dr China Harrison: Accessing PrEP through pharmacies to improve HIV prevention
- Fiona Fox: Common Ambition Bristol (CAB): co-producing interventions with African and Caribbean communities to tackle HIV inequity and increase testing
Speakers
Dr Catherine Dodds
Dr Catherine Dodds is Associate Professor in Global Health Policy at the University of Bristol’s School for Policy Studies. Her work uses co-produced qualitative methods with communities most affected by HIV. She has shaped HIV policy, led innovative projects like HIV stigma-reduction training ("Hearts and Minds") and is Co-Chair of the tackling stigma workstream for Bristol Fast Track City
Dr China Harrison
Dr China Harrison is a Research Fellow in qualitative and behavioural science. China is part of the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration West and the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Evaluation and Behavioural Science at the University of Bristol. She is an experienced psychologist with extensive experience in sexual, reproductive and fertility health research.
Fiona Fox
Fiona Fox, a Research Fellow at NIHR ARC West and the University of Bristol, has expertise in co-producing research with minoritised communities. Fiona has led the qualitative evaluation of CAB since 2021. Marsha Doran is a community member of CAB’s project delivery group. She is also a community researcher within the evaluation team. Fiona and Marsha will co-present the work of Common Ambition Bristol.

Jeremy Horwood
Jeremy Horwood is Professor of Social Sciences and Applied Health Research from Bristol Medical School at University of Bristol. He is theme lead for NIHR Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Evaluation and Behavioural Science and NIHR ARC West. He is co-director of the Sexual Health Improvement Programme Health Integration Team (SHIP HIT) and on the steering committee for Bristol Fast Track City. His work spans pragmatic mixed-methods research, including pharmacy PrEP delivery, community-led HIV initiatives, to address inequalities in sexual health services and the national evaluation of emergency department op-out testing.
