Antimicrobial resistance in the UK: diagnostics, discourse, and decision-making

Pills image

This seminar will focus on a mixed-methods appraisal of antimicrobial resistance and rapid diagnostic tests in the UK: the evidence, professionals’ views, industry lobbying, and the impact of concepts like the ‘appropriateness’ of antibiotic prescribing.

Rebecca Glover situates her research within the field of the commercial determinants of health, which previously has been centred upon the unhealthy commodities industries. She highlights how solutions to so-called ‘wicked problems’ such as AMR may ostensibly appear to be value-neutral while in fact being anything but; and she considers the symbolism and material effects of the privileging of the private sector in public health.
