Achieving elimination of unsafe abortion by 2030

What do we need to do and what do we need to know to get there?

Over the past two decades there has been a revolution in the way women across the world access abortion care due to new technologies and methods of delivering care. Marie Stopes International (MSI) is one of the world’s largest non-governmental providers of contraception, safe abortion and post-abortion care services, operating in 37 countries. It has served over 120 million women with reproductive health care over the last 43 years.

In this talk, senior members of MSI’s Evidence to Action team will present recent, ongoing and planned research that supports delivery of its strategy for safe abortion and post-abortion care. They will discuss some of the methodological and operational challenges in conducting abortion research across a range of settings, as well as discussing ongoing evidence gaps that need to be filled in order to support universal access to abortion care. The talk will cover the three key pillars of strategic focus for MSI: delivering a knowledge revolution that enables and empowers women to use medication abortion safely; building a network of safe points of access, including work with the public, private and informal sectors; and scaling service delivery with integrity, to ensure the delivery of high quality care and positive, non-stigmatising experiences of abortion.
