The Centre organises a range of activities for both its members and people outside of the Centre. Our activities aim to showcase the work of its members and LSHTM, foster collaboration within and outside of LSHTM, or provide training to those engaging with data and statistical science.
Our activities can be roughly divided into four core areas, with all of our activities reacting to current needs and interests.
Events and seminars
- Annual large-scale events
Since its launch, the Centre has organised an annual large-scale event, including conferences, which centre around one of our areas of focus. Our large-scale events aim to bring together those who work in the field of health data and biostatistics for discussions and knowledge-sharing.
Our recent annual events include:
- Centre for Data & Statistical Science for Health seminar series
The Centre for Data & Statistical Science for Health seminar series showcases research relating to our focal challenges and themes from DASH members across LSHTM, as well as from external speakers. Currently, we offer two main series:
Health Data Interest Group seminars
Statistical Methodology seminars
We welcome external attendees to the majority of our seminars, and the majority can be attended in person at LSHTM or remotely. Please visit our 'Events' website section to keep informed about our upcoming events, and also view recordings of our past seminars in the 'past events' tab.
Internal networking
- Special interest groups
Currently, the Centre hosts some special interest groups to advance specific topics and techniques of interest to our members, which includes:
- R user group: dedicated to promoting the use of, and supporting colleagues who work with, R software. The group organises monthly meet-ups and offers lunchtime workshops to train staff on R software.
- Target trial emulation journal club
- Early Career Researchers (ECR) Section
This section aims to connect Early Career Researchers (ECR) working across the key Centre for Data & Statistical Science for Health centre themes. Our recent work has focused on organising events to highlight research by ECRs in the centre (DASH ECR Showcase) and facilitate networking (informal tea-socials).
As the centre grows, we plan to expand the range of events organised, so keep an eye out on our website and the Centre for Data & Statistical Science for Health mailing list for updates.
If you are interested in contributing to this section or have any ideas for future events, please contact John Tazare.
Internal training
- R training courses
The Centre for Data & Statistical Science for Health R group has organised a summer lunchtime course for staff on the R software.
These courses are designed to support the transition to R as the main statistical software used for teaching and research in the School. Specifically, lessons cover the main aspects of the R software and, while they offer a progressive introduction, they can also be attended independently.
Here is an example schedule from 2025.
- Wednesday 23 July 2025: Getting started with R
- Wednesday 30 July 2025: Basic Data Management in R
- Wednesday 6 August 2025: Advanced data management with tidyverse in R
- Wednesday 13 August 2025: Basic Graphics in R
- Wednesday 20 August 2025: Advanced graphics with ggplot2 in R
- Wednesday 27 August 2025: Regression in R
Please register for Centre for Data & Statistical Science for Health membership to receive updates about any future workshops.
- AI upskilling and literacy
The Centre is committed to the responsible use of artificial intelligence and machine learning technique in health data and statistics research.
Further details of specific Centre for Data & Statistical Science for Health activities in this field will be provided shortly.
- Causal inference
The Centre is currently in the process of organising a series of seminars and workshops on the introduction of causal inference for epidemiology and public health.
Further details will be provided shortly. Please register for Centre for Data & Statistical Science for Health membership to ensure you receive such updates.
