Whose mental health? Learnings from the MADAD Study with indigenous youth in rural India
Using the MADAD Study as a case study approach to explore participatory approaches to community mental health
The seminar will explore participatory approaches to community mental health, including the challenges and opportunities of building culturally grounded, community-owned models of care in low-resource settings.
It will use a case study approach (a project called MADAD - Mobilising Adolescents for Depression & Anxiety Disorders from rural India) to highlight the involvement of young people with lived experience in shaping the research and intervention process.
While global mental health discourse has increasingly focused on reducing the mental health care gap, much less attention has been given to how Indigenous young people themselves understand distress, wellbeing, recovery, and support. Using the MADAD case study, the seminar will discuss implications for global mental health, particularly around questions of evidence, participation, and the role of lived experience in designing mental health systems.
