The power of storytelling for children with disabilities and their families
Exploring the power of stories to amplify the voices of families of children with developmental disabilities and the importance of stories to support acceptance, healing and shifting perspectives.
The Ubuntu hub webinars aim to engage those working in early child disability including the LSHTM ‘Ubuntu Hub’ global community of practice. This will be an engaging 60 minute online webinar exploring the value of stories by showcasing stories and images from a family engagement event in Uganda: "The voice of Ubuntu", an exploration of the power of ‘togetherness and belonging’ for children with developmental disabilities and their families. As well as exploring narrative therapy techniques that can be used with families.
This event is open to everyone with interest or experience in implementing programmes for children with developmental disability and their caregivers and will share learning from the Ubuntu Hub programmes.
The webinar will include a presentation from the Baby Ubuntu team about the “Voices of Ubuntu” event, and a presentation from narrative therapists in India, sharing background about narrative therapy and simple techniques that can be used with families of children with disabilities.
This will be followed by an interactive discussion with attendees and Q&A.
Attendees will learn about:
1) The importance of stories and amplifying the voices of families of children with disabilities.
2) The Baby Ubuntu story telling toolkit, which partners can use to collect stories and images with families of children with disabilities.
3) Narrative therapy, its background and simple techniques for using with families.
4) Have the opportunity to share experiences, ideas and learning with a global expert panel.
