From Mogadishu to the world: Rethinking humanitarian health research in the horn of Africa
In this lecture, Dr Najib Isse Dirie from Somali National University will reflect on leading humanitarian health research from within a crisis context. He will explore how local knowledge and expertise can help decolonise evidence production in Somalia, the Horn of Africa and across the continent.
A panel discussion with colleagues from Evidence for Change, SIMAD University and the University of Leeds will follow. Panellists will share insights from their research and work in Somalia, experiences of collaborating with international partners, and priorities for strengthening research across the region.
The event will be followed by a reception in the Pumphandle Social.
Speakers
Najib Isse Dirie
Dr Najib Isse Dirie is a urologist and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at Somali National University, commissioner at the East Africa Health Research Commision (EAHRC) and a member of the National Cancer Committee for Somalia. He is also Co-founder of the Mogadishu Institute of Health, former deputy rector for research at SIMAD University and a researcher with more than 70 peer-reviewed publications. For the past six years, he has led a research team in Mogadishu at Somali National University and SIMAD University, working with LSHTM in various humanitarian health research projects.
