Live Twitter Chat: World Antimicrobial Awareness Week

Follow and join in on @LSHTM_AMR, with #QandAMR and #WAAW

Wednesday 18th November marks the start of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, which aims to increase awareness of drug-resistant infections globally, and to encourage best practices among the public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of these hard-to-treat diseases.

At the LSHTM AMR Centre, we’re using this occasion to highlight the key questions and challenges facing the AMR research community today. We want to hear your ideas and perspectives on how to solve them – whether you are an AMR researcher or simply interested in learning more.

Our aims are to:

  • Highlight the key questions, challenges and exciting areas of research currently being explored in AMR.
  • Share some of the knowledge and evidence developed by AMR researchers at LSHTM.
  • Gain a wide variety of perspectives on AMR research questions, sharing ideas, learnings and opportunities.
  • Foster collaborations between different disciplines within the broad spectrum of AMR research, and with researchers working in other fields.

The session will centre around five key questions, each with an expert host from LSHTM to guide conversation on these topic areas:

  • Q1: What are the barriers to discovery of new antimicrobials, and are there reasons to be optimistic about drug development?
  • Q2: How important are WASH interventions and behaviour change in AMR control?
  • Q3: Have we seen the step-change we were hoping for in rapid diagnostic tests for AMR?
  • Q4: Is the WHO ‘priority pathogens’ list sufficient to address the challenges of drug-resistant infections globally?
  • Q5: Will the Covid-19 pandemic increase or decrease drug-resistant infections worldwide?

How to take part

Step 1 – Follow @LSHTM_AMR on twitter

Step 2 – On the day, the questions will be posted from the AMR Centre Twitter using #QandAMR – follow this to see the conversations.

Step 3 – If you want to reply to one of our questions, make sure your tweet contains the following

  1. #QandAMR – everyone will be using this and we’ll be tracking the conversation on this thread.
  2. The corresponding answer number to question number – so A1 for Q1, A2 for Q2 etc.
