Hypertension in Russia: Initial results from a major new research project

Russia has one of the highest rates of mortality from Cardiovascular Disease in the world. The International Project on Cardiovascular Disease in Russia (IPCDR) was set up with the aim of understanding why this is the case. Since 2014 LSHTM has been collaborating with researchers in Russia, Norway and Germany in carrying out extensive field work investigations of this problem. We have recently completed our data collection which includes very detailed cross-sectional surveys of cardiovascular risk factors and clinical characteristics of 4600 men and women in two cities (Arkhangelsk and Novosibirsk) and a separate study of over 1000 incident cases of acute myocardial infarction in 13 regions throughout Russia. In this seminar we will present the study’s initial findings on hypertension including comparisons with the 7th wave of the Tromsø Study conducted in Norway in 2016.

This seminar is jointly organised by the Global Centre for Chronic Diseases and the Department of Non-communicable Diseases Epidemiology
