Ethical challenges around research on NCDs in humanitarian settings
Explore the ethics dilemmas and challenges in undertaking research in humanitarian settings and their specific relevance to research on NCDs in crisis settings.
NCDs have received growing focus in the humanitarian and emergency communities over the last 10 to 15 years. Alongside this, a body of research has developed, mainly focusing on small-scale prevalence studies and models of care, largely in the middle east. Key research gaps remain, especially on the burden of disease in crisis-affected settings, the clinical impact of care interruption on people living with NCDs, models of co-production, and the (cost)effectiveness of care models, including community-based models.
The Centre for Global Chronic Condition's NCDs in Humanitarian Settings Knowledge Hub, in partnership with the Danish Red Cross and in consultation with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, is hosting a series of webinars and technical meetings during to explore the development of research networks and methodologies on NCDs in humanitarian and emergency settings. The aim of the series is to strengthen research for people living with NCDs in humanitarian settings, to create a space for reflection and deeper thinking and to explore challenges, adaptations, and research needs.
Webinar 4 will cover ethical issues, challenges and lessons learned around undertaking good quality research on NCDs in humanitarian settings. We will explore the ethics dilemmas and challenges in undertaking research in humanitarian settings, and their specific relevance to research on NCDs in crisis settings. Themes will cover research ethics processes, research quality and scientific rigour, and working with vulnerable populations and in places with limited governance.
