Making an application for US loans

To apply for your US loans please follow the application instructions below. (Continuing students will need to follow the procedure below for each academic year they require US loans.) Loan application cover sheets for 2018-19 can now be submitted, but please note that the loans will only be certified from the start of July 2018 onwards.

To apply for direct loans

There are 6 steps to applying for a US Federal loan at the School. These are explained in detail below. You can also see an overview of them on page 1 of the School's US Federal Loans Application Flowchart.

Step 1 - Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)  

You must first complete the FAFSA. FAFSA applications can be completed online at the US Department of Education's FAFSA website. After applying you can check the status of your application and make amendments online. If you are in the second year of your studies or beyond (research students and part time masters students) you should complete the Renewal FAFSA, including updates on family income and assets.

When completing your FAFSA or contacting the US Department of Education you should quote the School name as 'University of London: London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, school code G22100.

Step 2 - Complete the Master Promissory Notes (MPNs)

You must submit the 'Direct Unsubsidized' MPN and if applying for a PLUS loan the 'PLUS' MPN at the Studentloans.gov website.

Step 3 - Complete the PLUS loan credit check if applying for the Direct Graduate PLUS loan

To qualify for a Direct Graduate PLUS Loan, you must not have an adverse credit history, as defined in the US Department of Education's regulations. If you have an adverse credit history, you may still be eligible for the loan by obtaining an endorser who does not have an adverse credit history and agrees to repay the loan if you do not; or, by documenting extenuating circumstances that meet the Department's requirements.  Further details can be found on the studentloans.gov website.

The US Department of Education conducts a credit check once you provide your consent. To initiate this process please click on 'Complete PLUS Request Process' at the Studentloans.gov website. After you complete your Direct PLUS loan request, the US Department of Education will conduct a credit check and notify you of the results. You will need to provide evidence of your successful credit check to the School when applying for your loans.

Please be aware that credit checks are only valid for 180 days. As the School processes US Federal loan requests from July each year we would strongly advise applicants to wait until at least 1 May to request a credit check. (Otherwise, there is always the chance that we'll need to ask you to request a further credit check at the time we're processing your loans. These checks will show on your credit history.)

Step 4 - Complete your entrance counseling at the Studentloans.gov website

Step 5 - Complete the LSHTM direct loan cover sheet

This should include your personal details, how much you wish to borrow and details of any other funding you have secured. Please download the cover sheet for the relevant academic year here:

Step 6 - Send your completed LSHTM cover sheet via email to the Tuition Fees team in the Registry (fees@lshtm.ac.uk), ensuring that you have completed all of the steps listed above. 

To apply for private loans

If applying for a private loan please apply via your chosen bank or lender. You should also complete a FAFSA (see Step 1 above) and complete and return the LSHTM direct loan coversheet (see Steps 5 & 6 above), which will outline your personal details, requested loan amount and details of the bank or lender to which you have made your loan application.

Additional information about applying for a loan

Please ensure you keep copies of all your loan documents. Keeping well organised records of your financial activities will go a long way towards managing your loans and achieving your financial goals. Keep all loan-related documents such as:

  • Applications
  • Promissory notes
  • Entrance counselling information
  • Credit check evidence
  • Disclosure statements
  • Repayment schedules 
  • Income tax returns

Please note that your loan cannot be certified until you have received and firmly accepted an offer of admission or have already enrolled as a student at the School. 

Once we have received the above documents your loan application will be assessed and we will contact you with details of your loan award. We will also provide you with a letter to confirm your funding for your visa application. 

If you need to apply for a visa and are dependent on Federal Aid for proof of funds it is advisable NOT to apply for the visa until you have received a letter confirming your loans and disbursement amounts and dates.
