This scholarship has been funded by the friends and family of Stuart Paynter, who passed away in May 2016 aged 46 after a sudden and severe illness.
Stuart Paynter was drawn to public health early in his clinical career, and studied at LSHTM for a Masters of Public Health (2001), which saw him develop this passion as well as form many life-long friendships. After some years as a public health consultant in the public system both in Cornwall and Brisbane, he completed a PhD on infant pneumonia in tropical regions at the University of Queensland in 2014. By applying the sharp intellect and enthusiasm he was known for, Stuart thrived and found fulfilment in research and teaching. His work provided an avenue to pursue his interests in infectious disease transmission and also in child health. Stuart was particularly driven by the injustice that many of the world’s children do not live to see their fifth birthdays due to preventable infectious diseases. Establishing this memorial scholarship aligns with Stuart’s willingness to and aptitude in mentoring students and emerging researchers.
The memorial scholarship aims to support quality research on infectious diseases which affect children, particularly in developing regions.
This 2025-26 Stuart Paynter Memorial Scholarship will award scholarships up to the value of GBP 12,000.00, and is intended to help fund research and travel costs associated with the MSc projects with a WASH focus. The total funding will be split between up to 6-12 students (minimum award amount of GBP 1,000.00).
