Kampala, Uganda – The future of global health research takes center stage today as leading scientists, policymakers, and other key stakeholders in public health gather at the Inaugural Joint MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit and Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) Research Dissemination Conference 2025. Under the theme, Building on our Past Discoveries, Paving the Way for a Healthier Future, this landmark event is set to accelerate research collaboration and inspire innovation to position research for real-world impact.
Held at Speke Resort Munyonyo from March 11-13, 2025, the conference brings together a dynamic network of global experts to tackle pressing health challenges, including emerging infections, vaccine development, non-communicable diseases, as well as the intersections of contemporary issues, from climate change, AI and health, to the evolving funding landscape of research.
A Legacy of Research Excellence
For more than 35 years, the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit has been a driving force in advancing research on infectious and non-communicable diseases, influencing health policies through the generation of key insights to shape life-saving interventions in Uganda, and regionally. In collaboration with UVRI, it has further facilitatedtimely virus discovery, outbreak response, and vaccine research.
“Our theme, ‘Building on Our Past Discoveries, Paving the Way for a Healthier Future,’ reminds us that research is not just about knowledge – it is about impact. It thrives on bold ideas, strong partnerships, and a relentless commitment toturning discoveries into action.,” said Professor Moffat Nyirenda, Director of the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit. “Over the next two and a half days, we have a unique opportunity to connect, challenge ourselves, and shape our research. Let this conference spark new collaborations, fuel bold discussions, and inspire fresh ideas that will drive the next wave of scientific breakthroughs!”

This year’s conference will feature thought-provoking keynote addresses, expert-led panels, and interactive discussions focusing on: exploring the latest innovations in treatment and prevention strategies for HIV, addressing gaps in vaccine access and development for Africa, by Africa, tackling the growing burden of diabetes, mental health, and other chronic conditions in resource-limited settings, investigating the far-reaching implications of environmental shifts on disease patterns and public health interventions, and leveraging AI to accelerate medical discoveries and improve health outcomes across Africa. The conference will also highlight the critical role of interdisciplinary collaboration and the power of community engagement in shaping impactful research.
Global Thought Leaders at the Forefront
The conference boasts an impressive lineup of speakers, including Dr. Paula Munderi of UNAIDS, who will deliver akeynote address on the future of HIV research, as well as Prof. Adrian Hill of the Jenner Institute, Oxford University, sharing insights on vaccine innovations.
