MRCG at LSHTM to host Dr. Aida Badiane, 2019 Crick African Network Fellow

Dr. Aida Badiane is one of the four new recipients of the Crick African Network’s https://www.crick.ac.uk/news/2019-05-03_four-more-african-scientists-aw….
The African Accelerator Awards are designed to help facilitate the transition from mid-career postdoctoral research scientists to research group leaders on the African continent.

Spending at least six months at the Crick, the fellows will also work at one of five African partner institutions, including the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM, where Dr. Badiane will be spending some of her time.

“I choose to conduct my research at The MRC Unit The Gambia, because it has one of the most relevant facilities for cutting edge research in Africa. It is a great opportunity to perform some of my work at the Crick, which has a great platform with an interdisciplinarity that allows people to work together. It is a great opportunity for me to be trained in new technologies and acquire new skills”, she remarked.

Dr. Badiane works as an Associate Professor at the Laboratory of Parasitology Mycology, Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Odontology, Cheikh Anta Diop University, Dakar. She is interested in strategies to eliminate malaria in her home country, Senegal in West Africa. After years of working in the field of malaria, she realizes that to address relevant research questions for diseases control and elimination, researchers should collaborate closely with control programs.

The Fellowship will provide an opportunity for her to extend her network and work at the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM to develop new strategies for malaria elimination in the Senegambia region.
