Supporting adolescents growing up with HIV: Insights from the VITALITY trial
Discuss findings from the VITALITY trial on key aspects of health and wellbeing among adolescents growing up with HIV.
As children with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa increasingly survive into adolescence, the long-term health challenges they face are becoming more apparent. Antiretroviral therapy - a combination of medication used to treat HIV - has significantly improved survival. However, it does not prevent all the complications associated with HIV transmitted from mother to child (perinatally acquired HIV), according to the latest evidence from the VITALITY trial.
This seminar will discuss findings from the VITALITY trial, which followed 842 adolescents in Zimbabwe and Zambia, on key aspects of health and wellbeing among adolescents growing up with HIV. Topics will include growth and bone health, vitamin D status, neurocognitive health and pregnancy.
The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion, bringing together perspectives on the health needs and longer-term outcomes of adolescents living with HIV.
