A closer look at relational aspects of intimate partner violence

Household decision making, romantic jealousy and IPV

Sexual exploitation of girls in Tanzania

This presentation will focus on the less studied, “relational level” of the socio-ecological model of intimate partner violence (IPV), taking a close look at the associations of household decision making, romantic jealousy, and suspicion of infidelity on the experience of intimate partner violence.

The exploration of household decision-making, as an indicator of women’s empowerment, and its association with IPV has so far yielded mixed results, mostly due to measurement issues. Given the sizeable investment in women’s empowerment initiatives, and their potential to improve women’s health, it is important to elucidate the relationship between household decision-making and IPV.

Dr. Ana Maria Buller will discuss this relationship, drawing on examples from her collaborative work and studies in Uganda and Ecuador. Romantic jealousy and infidelity are commonly cited triggers of IPV, but they are under-researched when thinking about mechanisms and pathways of association, and their link with emotional IPV and controlling behaviours.

Marjorie Pichon will present preliminary results from the Jealousy and IPV collaborative an ongoing project delving into these issues, using examples from a global systematic review, and secondary analysis of qualitative and quantitative data from Ecuador, Germany, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.
