Risk Informed Development: From crisis to resilience

Dr Sara Pantuliano
Dr Sara Pantuliano, Acting Executive Director of the Overseas Development Institute

The Health in Humanitarian Crises is pleased to welcome Dr Sara Pantuliano, Acting Executive Director of the Overseas Development Institute on 26 June.  Dr Pantuliano will be our speaker for the Humanitarian Perspectives Annual Lecture, a yearly event which showcases the work of outstanding individuals who improve the health and wellbeing of populations in times of crisis.

The lecture will cover the complex relationship between development progress and risks and threats, including climate change, conflict and violence, economic and financial instability and organised crime, as well as the risks arising out of development itself. It will propose a new approach to development that takes account of these complex risks: that is risk-informed. The lecture will outline what a risk-informed approach can look like in practice and how a change in mindset and strategy can help achieve development gains that are more sustainable and resilient to evolving and complex threats and risks.

Speaker bio: Dr Pantuliano is Acting Executive Director at ODI, where she has previously led the humanitarian team for six years. She is a member of the Global Future Council on the Humanitarian System of the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Managing Editor of Disasters Journal and a Trustee of IRIN news and SOS Sahel. She has recently been appointed as the Vice-Chair of the Board of Muslim Aid, and has served on a range of advisory boards, including Oxford University’s Refugees Studies Centre and the UN Association of the UK. She holds a PhD in Politics and has written extensively on Sudan, conflict and humanitarian affairs.

The lecture will be chaired by Prof Francesco Checchi (LSHTM), and followed by a drinks reception in the South Courtyard.

This session will be live-streamed and recorded accessible to both internal and external audiences.
