New vaccines to dramatically interrupt the TB epidemic with Professor Willem Hanekom

This annual lecture is organised in honour of the life and work of Stephen Lawn. Steve was Professor of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and an active member of the TB Centre and worked closely with the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where he was based from 2005 to 2012. Steve worked tirelessly to improve the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis among people living with HIV/AIDS. He authored over 250 publications and received many awards.
This year's annual lecture, titled “New vaccines to dramatically interrupt the TB epidemic” will be delivered by Professor Willem Hanekom, the executive director of the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI). The lecture will be held in Cape Town with a watch party in London.

Professor Willem Hanekom
Professor Willem Hanekom is executive director of the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He holds a professor position at University College London and affiliate professor positions at the Universities of KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Town and Washington. Willem has worked in TB vaccine discovery and development for most of his career, including directing the South African TB Vaccine Initiative (SATVI) at the University of Cape Town, and leading the TB vaccine programme at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He serves on WHO’s PDVAC and as a strategic advisor for WHO’s TB Vaccine Accelerator, among other international advisory roles.
