Beyond medicine: Social protection and the fight against tuberculosis in Brazil

Davide Rasella and Priscila Scaff will explore how conditional cash transfer programmes impact on tuberculosis incidence and mortality.

This seminar will present evidence on how conditional cash transfer programmes, such as Bolsa Família, influence tuberculosis incidence and mortality. It will explore how these effects vary by race, ethnicity and socioeconomic factors, highlighting the role of social protection in reducing TB inequalities.

Speakers

  • Professor Davide Rasella is an ICREA Research Professor and Head of the Health Impact Assessment and Evaluation Group at ISGlobal, Barcelona. His work focuses on the evaluation of social protection and public health policies and their effects on infectious diseases and health inequalities. Using large datasets and advanced forecasting methods, he investigates how social policies can reduce tuberculosis and other poverty-related diseases.
     
  • Dr Priscila Scaff is a Postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Collective Health, Federal University of Bahia in partnership with the Center for Data. She also works for the Knowledge Integration for Health at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, focuses on studies of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS using data from the 100 Million Brazilian Cohort. Her interests include epidemiology, social determinants of health, infectious diseases (mainly TB and HIV/AIDS), and the impact assessment of social and health policies.
