Many roads to Ithaca: An odyssey in global health and infectious diseases with Professor Matthew Chico

Inaugural Lecture by Professor Matthew Chico

Inaugural lecture text with green background

Professor Matthew Chico is an infectious disease epidemiologist with over 30 years of global health experience across Latin America, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region. His inaugural lecture will trace his professional journey in global health, weaving in stories from his 1995 trans-America cycling trip from Seattle, WA, to Boston, MA, (3,450 miles), his 1997 thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (2,200 miles), and his 2004 journey-run from Washington, DC, to San Francisco (3,492 miles), raising awareness and funds for anti-retroviral therapy in Washington DC and measles vaccination campaigns in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2006, Matthew arrived at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and, over the past two decades, has developed a research portfolio aimed at reducing the dual-burden of malaria and reproductive tract infections in pregnancy, and optimising malaria interventions that target young children. The roads to Ithaca have not been without challenge. Along the way, Matthew has encountered his share of Cyclopes, Calypsos and Cicones. Join him online or in person as he recounts the roads travelled, and to hear plans for his next journey.

The lecture will take place from 17:30 - 18:30, followed by a 1-hour in-person drinks reception in the Pumphandle Social.
