Film screening: Open Dialogue - an alternative, Finnish approach to healing psychosis

In the far north of Finland, a group of innovative family therapists converted the area’s traditional mental health system, which once boasted some of Europe’s poorest outcomes for schizophrenia, into one that now gets the best statistical results in the world for first-break psychosis. They call their approach -  Open Dialogue.

Open Dialogue, a film-documentary by New York based Daniel Mackler, weaves together interviews with psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and journalists to create both a powerful vision of medication-free recovery and a critique of traditional psychiatry.

Guest speaker: Tom Stockmann is a Specialist Registrar in Psychiatry in North East London. He has recently completed a diploma in Peer-supported Open Dialogue (POD) and edits the POD Bulletin (podbulletin.com). POD is a collaborative, network-based approach to mental health crises in the NHS.

The film screening will be followed by a discussion.

This event is a monthly series, coordinated by Dr Erminia Colucci (Queen Mary University) and Dr Alex Cohen (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine).
