Lecture on contemporary global health issues
For many years, progress in the development of drugs for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) suffered from limited interest from the commercial sector and lack of a global strategy. A major breakthrough came in 2012, with the signing of the London Agreement on NTDs, which brought together governments, pharmaceutical companies, the academic sector and NGOs. Both LSHTM and the UK government were amongst many global co-signees. In this lecture, Professor John Kelly will discuss how working with the commercial sector and not-for-profit drug development consortia has accelerated progress in the field of new therapeutics for Chagas disease, the most important parasitic infection in Latin America. Furthermore, John will describe how new technical advances and a more open research environment have also contributed to important advances in finding new treatments for this debilitating infection.
