How can NGOs and academic institutions work together effectively to generate rigorous evaluation evidence that informs programmes, policy, and practice?

This seminar will explore the opportunities, challenges, and the practical realities of NGO–academic collaborations in the evaluation of public health programmes. As funding pressures increase across the research and development sectors, effective partnerships are becoming increasingly important for generating high-quality evidence and maximising impact.

Drawing on real-world examples of collaborative evaluations, speakers from NGOs and academia will reflect on the processes of designing and delivering evaluations together. Their experience includes building partnerships, defining research questions, selecting methods, managing implementation, and translating findings into action.

The session will feature a case study of the evaluation of the CAMFED livelihoods programme for young women in Zimbabwe, the Raising Voices project and the Tusobola: We Can project both in Uganda. There will be joint presentations by colleagues from LSHTM, MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, Amref Health Africa, CAMFED, and Raising Voices. The seminar will highlight the collaborative approach taken throughout the evaluation and share lessons learnt by both researchers and practitioners.

The seminar aims to foster connections between NGOs and academics, showcase different approaches to collaborative evaluation, and create opportunities for future partnerships.
