Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the process where a student can identify, explore, and request the recognition of academic credit for previous certificated learning studied at LSHTM or elsewhere before entry onto a programme of study, enabling exemption from identified modules. Read LSHTM’s RPL policy

How do I apply for RPL?

You will need to submit an RPL application form along with transcripts, course syllabi, and any other required documentation so LSHTM can evaluate the equivalence of your prior learning. It should be noted that LSHTM does not accept learning that has received a ‘compensated pass’ as part of any request for exemptions through its RPL procedures.

If you are studying a LSHTM programme at the University of London, you will need to submit a Transfer of Registration for Distance Learning application form only. This form should be submitted from August and will be processed and we will arrange the transfer on your behalf prior to the start of the next academic year in October.  Please note, requests to transfer in 2026 cannot be considered once the academic session has begun.

Who can apply for RPL?

Current or prospective students who have successfully completed modules or courses at LSHTM or another institution and now wish to transfer that credit into an LSHTM degree programme.

Can I switch from my current course at another university to a degree at LSHTM?

Yes, it may be possible to transfer into an LSHTM degree through RPL. Your previous study will need to be assessed to ensure it is current (studied within the last 5 years), relevant to the LSHTM programme you have identified and at the right level of study (Level 7).

Can prior online or distance learning courses be considered for RPL?

Yes, as long as the course or modules were completed at a recognised institution, are credit-bearing, and are assessed at the appropriate academic level. Short courses, MOOCs, or non-credit-bearing training are generally not eligible.

Can I use RPL from an online or distance learning course to transfer into an in-person LSHTM degree?

Currently, transferring directly from a distance learning programme to a face-to-face programme is not possible. However, you may be able to apply for RPL for up to four modules provided the modules you have already completed are equivalent in content, credit, and academic level to those offered in the in-person programme. You will also need to meet the standard entry requirements for the in-person degree. Detailed module learning outcomes can be found in the module specifications

Can I use RPL from an in-person course to transfer into an online LSHTM programme?

No, you cannot transfer your registration from an in-person degree programme to a Distance Learning programme, however Credits earned in in-person study may be considered for credit exemption from an LSHTM distance learning degree, subject to equivalence checks and programme limits on transferable credits.

How many credits can be transferred through RPL?

Prior learning can be recognised for up to one third of the total credits of the award:

  • 60 credits for a Master’s degree
  • 40 credits for a PGDip
  • 20 credits for a PGCert

Credits may only be transferred if they haven’t already been used in a previous award.

The exact number of transferable credits also depends on the equivalence of the prior learning to LSHTM modules, programme requirements, and any caps set by the School.

Students studying LSHTM programmes awarded by the University of London If you are studying a LSHTM programme at the University of London , there is no limit to the amount of credit that can be transferred.

Is RPL guaranteed once I apply?

No. RPL decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, depending on the content, level, and quality of your prior studies, as well as the requirements of the LSHTM degree. All RPL requests are reviewed by the Programme Director, whose decision is final.

When should I apply for RPL?

RPL applications should be submitted as early as possible in the admissions process, ideally at the time of applying for your chosen LSHTM degree.
