After you apply (research)

After applying for your Research degree, there are a number of stages through which your application passes. We’ll keep you informed along the way.

Acknowledging your application

After you submit your research application you will receive an automatic receipt. Your application will be uploaded into our Student System and reviewed by the Admissions team. Once we’ve checked that your application is complete, it is then forwarded to the Research Degree Manager of the relevant Faculty to be reviewed and assessed.

Your User ID

We will email you your unique LSHTM user ID. You'll need this to set up an IT account so that you can then log in to Applicants Portal to track your application and to accept your offer if you are successful.  Keep a note of your user ID and account details as you will need these throughout the process.

Your offer

If your research application is successful, we will send you a formal offer letter by email.

We cannot make you an offer if your application is incomplete. Use your user ID and password to log in to the Applicant Portal to check for any further documents we need. Please ensure that you set up an IT account before visiting Self Service.

  • If your offer is unconditional, there is nothing more that you need to do.
  • If your offer is conditional, we will inform you of the next steps and documents to be submitted in order to make your offer unconditional.
Accepting your offer

Log in to the Applicant Portal  to accept your offer. You will have 28 days to accept your offer before it is withdrawn.
