The MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit is located across several campuses, research sites and Hospitals across the country. The Unit head office is based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) Entebbe campus, with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.

Entebbe (Headquarters)

Situated about 35km from Kampala, the Unit's main operational base is located at the campus of the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Entebbe. The MRC Unit includes administrative offices, research clinics, laboratories for the Basic Science Programme and the Clinical Laboratory Section (CDLS), the IT and the Data Management and Statistics section, the Maintenance Workshop and other technical and infrastructural support services and a guest house.


Located 115km south west of Entebbe, in Kalungu district, the Kyamulibwa field station was established in 1989 as MRC/UVRI's first study site in Uganda. Initially operating in premises donated by a community member, the station now boasts of permanent structures constructed on land donated by the Uganda government to ease service delivery to the communities.


The Unit's field station in Masaka town forms the base for various studies conducted in Masaka District. About 90 staff members are based here. The premises comprise project offices, a data section, laboratories, two study clinics as well as stores and back-up electrical power supply.
