Training opportunities

General talent, technical, research, leadership and soft training skills opportunities

Training and development are a vital key to the Unit’s enhancement of its workforce and surety of its comprehensive strategy toward general research quality improvement. Fundamental to this is identifying gaps in knowledge, skills, and abilities through the assessment of both institutional and individual needs and addressing those gaps through targeted training and career development initiatives.

  • Internship programme: a specialised programme for all national and international high school graduates, college and university graduates as well as individuals to gain experience from our varying departments (up to six months);
    • Laboratories (Biomedical, Microbiology, Genomics)
    • Clinical Services Department
    • Themes (Vaccines and Immunity, Nutrition and Planetary Health, Disease Control and Elimination)
    • Administrative departments
  • Short courses: a series of short courses open to staff, national and international applicants.
  • MPhil/ PhD and post-doctoral research: doctoral training programs for potential students to undertake research within the Unit. This is inline with the Unit’s strategy to strengthen and build the capacity of young scientists.

Every year, calls are made for the recruitment of four potential candidates for the PhD studentship. This studentship is open to not only staff but also advertised externally (national and international) for potential residents of Africa.

The Chair of the Higher Degree Committee presides over the selection process under the supervision of a third-party monitor who observes the transparency of the recruitment. Prospective students with a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) can progress to a PhD programme.
