Malaria Centre Co-Directors visit MRC Unit The Gambia

The Co-Directors of the Malaria Centre at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) visited the MRC Unit The Gambia (MRCG) from 28 February to 1 March 2024.

The three-day visit aimed to foster collaboration with Malaria researchers, showcase the Centre’s initiatives and facilitate dialogue among various malaria research groups within MRCG. 

During their visit, Dr. Jackie Cook and Dr. Sam Wassmer, Co-Directors of LSHTM’s Malaria Centre, were honored to participate in the inauguration of the Insectary in Fajara, a significant milestone in the battle against malaria in Africa.

Dr. Jackie Cook,  described the visit as an opportunity to explore various projects and forge connections between researchers in The Gambia and London. "We want our colleagues here to feel fully integrated into the Malaria Centre network," she said, highlighting the potential benefits such as increased funding opportunities and collaborative ventures. 

Dr Samuel Wassmer, emphasized the importance of nurturing fresh ideas and mentoring the next generation of malaria researchers. "Our partnership with scientists and staff here is vital," he noted, underlining their commitment to advancing malaria research on an international scale. 

The Malaria Centre has long been a steadfast ally of the MRCG malaria center, significantly contributing to joint efforts in combatting malaria, honoring collaborative efforts towards a future free from malaria in the sub-region and globally.
