Is wastewater surveillance the next frontier for AMR surveillance

This talk explores wastewater-based surveillance to track antimicrobial resistance, highlighting its potential, challenges, and role in global health.

AMR Centre event card

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a critical threat to global health, requiring innovative surveillance strategies to combat its spread. Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) offers a transformative, population-level approach to monitoring antimicrobial-resistant genes and organisms. By leveraging modern molecular tools, WBS can provide (near) real-time insights into resistance trends, emerging hotspots, and the environmental impact of AMR. This talk explores the potential of wastewater surveillance as a tool for integrating environmental and clinical AMR monitoring. Challenges, including methodological standardization and ethical considerations, will also be discussed, highlighting the role of this approach in shaping future global health strategies.
