Understanding arbovirus burden across the life course

For the 2026 Annual Lecture from the Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases, Professor Henrik Salje will present on the understanding of arbovirus burden across the life course.

Arboviruses are a growing and dynamic problem. The expanding footprint of mosquitoes is resulting in new territories for viruses such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika, including in Europe and North America. In endemic settings, the underlying demography of populations is changing with reductions in birth rates resulting in shifts of infections towards older individuals.

Professor Salje will discuss how context is crucial to both understanding the local ecology of these viruses and the tailoring of interventions, and how genomic and immunity data are key to mathematical modelling efforts in this space.

This lecture will be followed by a drinks reception in the Pumphandle Social Courtyard.

Speaker

Henrik Salje

Henrik Salje is a Professor at the University of Cambridge and Head of the Pathogen Ecology Unit at Institut Pasteur. His group works on the emergence, spread and control of infectious diseases, especially arboviruses. He uses analytical methods to understand the complex and multifaceted drivers of pathogen spread, including consideration of immunological, genetic and behavioural aspects.
