Target trial emulation: a framework for causal inference from observational data
Introducing the target trial framework with discussion on new TARGET reporting guideline.
When randomised trials are unavailable or not feasible, observational studies are used to inform decision-making. The goal of these observational studies is often to estimate causal effects; however, common biases can limit their usefulness. The target trial framework provides a structured approach to designing observational studies using the framework of a randomised trial to avoid introducing common biases.
In this talk, Harrison will introduce the target trial framework and discuss its growing use across in medicine and epidemiology. He will also present the recently published TARGET reporting guideline, an initiative to improve transparency and quality in studies emulating a target trial.
