Star Homes: Better housing for better health

In this seminar, researchers and an architect will discuss how better housing can improve health, sharing findings from a study in rural Tanzania where children living in specially designed ‘Star Homes’ had 44% less malaria, as well as fewer cases of diarrhoea and respiratory infections.

Malaria Centre event card

Can a house be a health intervention? In rural Tanzania, children living in purpose-designed "Star Homes" – with screened, elevated sleeping spaces, natural ventilation, safe water, sanitation and cleaner cooking – had 44% less malaria than children in traditional houses, along with fewer episodes of diarrhoea and respiratory infection. Clinicians Salum Mshamu and Lorenz von Seidlein, plus architect Jakob Brandtberg Knudsen will present the results of this cluster randomised trial and the story behind it: how an architect and epidemiologists designed homes that families actually want to live in, what it takes to run a trial where the intervention is a house, and why the built environment may be one of the most underused tools in global and planetary health. Bring your lunch and your questions.
