Measuring the impact of AMR in sub-Saharan African hospitals

Clinician takes a blood sample from a young boy in Sibanor

The impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in severe forms of bacterial infection is critical to estimating the global impact of AMR. However, these impacts are hard to generalise between high- and low-income healthcare contexts, which differ substantially in access to 2nd and 3rd line treatments for resistant infections. The MBIRA study (Mortality from Bacterial Infections Resistant to Antibiotics) is in preparation at LSHTM, aiming to perform observation work with African hospitals to measure mortality caused by bloodstream infections.

This session will outline the background to the study, provide useful insights into the challenges of measuring AMR impacts, and will describe some influential prior studies and MBIRA pilot study data.
