Finding hope in an unstable world: Local experiences of resilience building in public health crises

This interactive session reflects on global case-studies of impactful community responses to climate and other humanitarian crises.

LSHTM event card

Global public health is more under threat than it has ever been. Healthcare systems are stretched to breaking point in a volatile, uncertain world wracked by climate change, conflict, social polarisation, governance failures and deep financial cuts.

This interactive event will launch a new book and share short presentations of case studies of community responses to climate and other humanitarian crises from across the globe. Speakers will share practical insights from local case studies of crisis-response, from cyclone and flooding disasters in Madagascar, drought responses in Ethiopia, protection of public health of indigenous people in Brazil, combining indigenous knowledge with meteorological forecasts for floods early warning in Uganda, and more.

Attendees will take hope and key learnings from these experiences of community empowerment, solidarity and partnership. These insights will challenge funders, governments, crisis-responders and researchers that we must “do things differently” to build resilience and effective crisis responses.

A cross-sector panel of academics, donors, citizen scientists and government advisors will debate how these inclusive and transformative approaches can be nurtured and embedded in research, programmes, organisational practice and governance.

The key audience is academics, funders and implementors working in the field of climate and humanitarian response, and anyone interested in local action to better protect healthcare in an uncertain world.

Please join us after the event for drinks and refreshments in the Pumphandle Social Bar.
