Empires of medicine: Medical education in the British and French Empires

Examination of medicial education in the British and French Empires during the long nineteenth century.

Graphic with text - LSHTM Event

This presentation examines the history of medical education in the British and French Empires during the long nineteenth century. Its target audience is students and staff interested in the history of medical education, as well as the broader colonial history of medicine.

This presentation will offer an overview of the speaker's research on medical education in the British and French empires during the long nineteenth century. It will examine how medical schools shaped professional hierarchies within a medical world increasingly interconnected across continents, questioning the dichotomy between "Western" and "traditional" medicine in empires, and consider how medical schools founded in the nineteenth century within the British and French empires relate to their own imperial pasts today.
