Economics of Drug Resistant Infections

Speaker bio: Anthony McDonnell is an economist working on how the Wellcome Trust can use economics more to fulfil its mission of improving healthcare by helping great ideas to flourish. Prior to this role Anthony was head of economic research at the UK Government appointed independent Review of Antimicrobial Resistance, which aimed to find economic and policy solutions to the growing threat of drug resistant infections.

Abstract: This lecture will look at the specific issue of drug resistant infections, and look at how economics as part of an interdisciplinary approach has helped improve our understanding of how limiting unnecessary use of antibiotics, and incentivise greater research in this area. Anthony will summarise the Review’s analysis of the economic barriers that have helped to cause this crisis as well as the recommendations the Review suggested be taken to avert catastrophe.
