The cut we still make: Episiotomy, childbirth and maternal health

In the next GVHC webinar, Judith Lieber explores episiotomy, its impact on postpartum haemorrhage and the wider conversation around respectful maternity care and ‘obstetric violence’.

GVHC webinar series

Join us to hear from Dr Judith Lieber, Research Fellow at LSHTM, as part of the Gender Violence & Health Centre (GVHC) Webinar Series.

Episiotomy - a cut to the perineum during childbirth – remains common in many settings, despite the World Health Organization advising against its routine use for the past three decades.

Sharing new evidence from the multi-country WOMAN-2 Trial, this talk will explore how often episiotomy is used across Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania and Zambia and examines its impact on postpartum haemorrhage, a leading cause of maternal mortality.

Beyond the data, the presentation will briefly explore the history of episiotomy and its place within wider conversation around respectful maternity care and ‘obstetric violence’.

Speaker

Dr Judith Lieber, Research Fellow at LSHTM, is an epidemiologist focused on maternal and reproductive health. Her work currently uses data from the WOMAN-2 trial to identify ways of preventing postpartum haemorrhage and improving maternal wellbeing after birth. Judith is also the lead of the TRANSFORM project, which aims to improve equitable access to the life-saving drug Tranexamic Acid.
